The Secret to Finding the Right Job - Hallie Crawford

The Secret to Finding the Right Job Sometimes finding the right job or career can seem like a very big puzzle. But even the most intricate puzzle can be completed piece- by-piece, one step at a time. However, many of us want to know every single step we need to take to land the perfect job in advance. And we want all pieces to fit in exact sequence. Often, we won’t even take the first step until we have the entire path mapped out. Somehow it feels safer that way. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, neither life nor career transition usually works out that neatly. There is no one-size-fits-all road map for finding the perfect job. So when my clients want to know all of the steps before getting started, I suggest we first start putting the puzzle together piece-by-piece. Once an idea begins to form, we  move in that direction. For you, I suggest: Follow your gut instinct. Take a step in a direction that feels right. Allow yourself the freedom to explore options as you move forward. Part of this process is trusting that you’ll be able to figure out how best to make the transition as you go. You just need to take a step in one direction and things will become clearer; then, as you take another step, things become even more clear, and so on, until the puzzle emerges as the full picture and you find your dream job. You’ve heard it before: it is a process, a journey. For some it’s short; for others it may take a little longer. It just depends on your starting point and your willingness to keep on stepping.

Useful Tips to Draft Your Resume

Useful Tips to Draft Your ResumeA resume worksheet is an essential guide to make the process of drafting a job application and a job offer smooth and easy. It is an alternative to the typical resume where you add your biography and why you are qualified for the job in the first paragraph.Resume worksheets are helpful because it gives you an idea of what to put in the first paragraph of your resume. Many times you will only be giving details of your qualifications and experiences, but not the whole picture. One worksheet helps you put more information. This can include how much experience you have or what other skills you may have that are relevant for the job.For this reason it is important to make sure you outline your work history from beginning to end, this is where the resume worksheet helps you. Some of the main areas to focus on are dates of employment, positions held, skills and abilities you have, hobbies and interests. This can make it easier to show how relevant your educat ion is to the position you are applying for.The standard resume worksheet does not require that you write your qualifications in the first paragraph. You can use this space to add a few details about your background if this is relevant to the job you are applying for. It may be a good idea to combine all of your achievements together and then talk about what you are doing now.Details about previous jobs or achievements that you had while employed are also suitable. You can show your past employers how you have helped them grow and flourish. It is a way to encourage them to refer you to others.A good example of a resume worksheet is the whiteboard resume which is also known as a list worksheet. This worksheet enables you to go through the alphabetical list of your qualifications and highlight those that apply to the job that you are applying for. This worksheet allows you to put all the relevant information in one place and makes the job application process easier. However, you should only list the high-level skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for. Most often employers want to know a little more about what you do for a living.

Attract Millennial Workers with Deep Discounts and Gift Cards

Attract Millennial Workers with Deep Discounts and Gift Cards Forget unlimited vacation and break room ping pong tables. The key to a millennial’s heart, according to a new survey, is gift cards. About 69% of workers in the U.K. ages 18 to 24 peg their satisfaction at work to the perks and benefits their employers offer, according to a Perkbox survey of more than 1,000 British workers. Millennials seem to care more about these types of perks than their older cohorts â€" only about 50% of baby boomers in the U.K. cite deep discounts to stores like Starbucks and Amazon as key to their workplace well-being, the survey says. “Millennials see this as something employers should do as standard, whereas older employees see it as a bonus,” Perkbox co-founder Saurav Chopra tells Bloomberg. Skyscanner, an Edinburgh-based flight comparison website, gives employees discounts at local food shops and hairdressers, for example. Airbnb provides employees with $2,000 a year to spend on the home-sharing site. In the U.S., perks range from free ski passes to yearly book stipends. For employers under budgetary constraints, Chopra says a little can go a long way. “If money is tight, it can take the form of a simple thank you or a couple of extra paid days leave,” he says. Overall, about 30% of the respondents describe themselves as unhappy at work, the survey found. This on par with the U.S. â€" out of a “happiness scale” of 100, most American employees rank at 71, according to research released by Robert Half on Thursday. There’s still plenty room to improve: about one-third of the employees polled indicated they were thinking about leaving their jobs in the next six months. Research published by last month by Deloitte shows that nearly half of millennial workers plan to switch jobs in the next two years.

8 Ways To Get Your Foot In The Door At Any Company - Work It Daily

8 Ways To Get Your Foot In The Door At Any Company - Work It Daily “If I could just get my foot in the door…” is a complaint I often hear from job seekers. With automated applicant tracking systems in such wide use, how do you bypass computers and connect with hiring managers? Related: 14 Ways To Research Company Culture Actually, there are multiple ways to do exactly that. Let’s take a look at eight. 1. Apply For Open Positions This isn’t the most effective way to get your foot in the door at most companies, but it does still work for some. To maximize your chance for an interview, make sure you customize your resume and cover letter by adding key words from the job posting. Why isn’t this an effective way to bring your candidacy to a company’s attention? First, you have maximum competition for each role you apply for since applicants typically number in the hundreds or higher. Second, only 15% of available jobs are ever advertised on job boards or other Internet/print resources, which means you’re overlooking 85% of open positions at any given moment. 2. Follow The Company On Social Media Interact Online The vast majority of employers offer you multiple ways to interact with them online â€" Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, and one or more company blogs. If you’re targeting specific companies, make sure you follow them via social media. Even more important, though, is to interact with them through that media. “Like” them on Facebook and comment on their news and posts. Review their LinkedIn profile periodically and “like” their updates. Retweet their Twitter posts and share their blog posts. Be seen to be interested in them as an employer. 3. Arrange An Informational Interview Within Your Target Department This is an old strategy that still works. An informational interview is just that â€" an interview you schedule to access insider information about an occupation or employer. It is not a job interview and shouldn’t be treated as one. Rather, this is your opportunity to ask the questions you’re not likely to find answers to in any website or print resource. Used strategically, informational interviews help you to explore the company’s culture and structure and determine which one or more departments are most likely to have roles that match your skills and capabilities. 4. Request A LinkedIn Introduction When you come across a hiring manager on LinkedIn that you want to connect with, find another LinkedIn member who knows him or her and request an introduction. When you stop by the profile of someone you want to connect with LinkedIn shows you who you know in common. If you leverage these specific connections into an introduction request, you’re essentially getting a “warm” referral. Make your case to the connection you want the introduction from â€" sell them on the reason you want the introduction and assure them your request is serious. I strongly recommend leveraging a “netserving” approach that involves offering something of value before you make a request of any networking contact. 5. Submit Your Marketing Materials To The Hiring Manager Once you’re connected to the hiring manager you can of course share your resume with him or her. However, keep in mind that many other candidates are doing the same thing. It would be smart, therefore, to look for a way to make your candidacy stand out. If you find out the hiring manager loves golf, for example, you could construct your cover letter with golf imagery, use a golf-related image somewhere in your materials, or include something small like a tee with your documents and include a personal comment. Keep your approach elegant, though â€" remember that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. 6. Build Connections In The Company On LinkedIn LinkedIn also tells you how you’re connected to companies when you visit a firm’s profile. Take advantage of this feature to help you deepen your connections with the company. Request introductions to other folks in the same firm and issue invitations to others in the department you’re targeting. Identify key employees in the company relevant to your search and review the groups to which each one belongs. Find an industry group they’re a part of that you are eligible to join and do so â€" this establishes a third-level connection without you having to tip your hand or approach the contact. Best of all, once you achieve this third-level connection, you can message that contact directly without requiring an introduction. 7. Research External Recruiter(s) Build Relationships As you build connection inroads to a target company, try messaging those contacts to find out which external recruiting firms they use for the types of positions you’ll be pursuing with them. Once you identify one or more external recruiters, build connections with them as well. I believe it’s critical to leverage a “give to get” strategy with recruiters since they are inundated by e-mails, voice mails, and LinkedIn messages/invites from candidates. If you approach them in the same way you’ll have to battle to stand out. Why not approach them differently from the start? Offer them something of value and allow your candidacy to prove itself over time. You’ll stand head and shoulders above the crowd as a result. 8. Court The Hiring Manager With #5 above I mentioned sending your resume to Hiring Managers. An even smarter strategy is to court the hiring manager over time as I just recommended doing with recruiters. Research the manager via your favorite search engine and check out as many social networking profiles as you can find. Ask your mutual connections to tell you about the person’s interests and the needs faced by his or her department. Then, brainstorm resources you can share with him or her that they may find helpful before you bring your candidacy to their attention. Prove your worth first and a deeper connection is likely to follow. After a time, you can then request a phone call or meeting with the person to explore ways you may be able to contribute in more significant ways to their team. With a little ingenuity and a fair amount of persistence you can get your foot in the door in almost any company you can find. Make use of as many resources as you can, including as many social networking options as you’re comfortable with to build a web of connections with your target companies. The result will be more interviews and more job offers â€" a decent payoff for a little work.? This post was originally published on an earlier date. 11 Unexpected Self-Care Tasks You Can Do After Work In 60 Minutes (Or Less) - Fairygodboss

11 Unexpected Self-Care Tasks You Can Do After Work In 60 Minutes (Or Less) - Fairygodboss Now a super-popular phrase adopted by wellness brands and those in search of a way to unwind, self-care comes in numerous iterations, and its form depends heavily on the individual taking part. Weve all heard of self-care tactics like a spa treatment, a massage, an hour of meditation, or a yoga class, but if those activities dont catch your interest, weve got 11 less-cliche ideas for the next time you feel inspired to take some time for yourself.1. Start a load of laundry.Okay, so no one reallyenjoys doing laundry. But household tasks like this can easily pile up during busy periods, creating an overwhelming backlog of work thats daunting to approach. Taking an hour after work to load up the washing machine and check that chore off your list can bring a highly worthwhile sense of relief.2. Take a language class either online or in-person.If your version of self-care involves keeping your mind s harp, consider investing your off-the-clock time in developing a new skill. Learning a new language not only hones your communication skills and opens up new possibilities for your future travel plans, but its also easy to do from the comfort of your own home, thanks to programs like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone.3. Fire up your favorite fitness app.Workout classes are effective ways to release endorphins and improve your physical stamina, but they can also erode your budget. A cheaper but equally-useful alternative involves fitness apps like Aaptiv and Nike + Run Club, which you can download on your phone or tablet and take with you everywhere that has WiFi.4. Try a new recipe. The sense of accomplishment caused by the successful execution of a cooking recipe is hard to beat...plus, the knowledge that youve made a financially-responsible choice and crafted a meal designed to suit your own tastes and dietary needs also proves beneficial.5. Hit up Netflix and enjoy a tried-and-true TV ep isode. With so many new shows and new episodes on cable TV and streaming platforms, its easy to feel the pressure to keep up with viewing trends. But sometimes, theres nothing more comforting than lying down on the couch or bed and cueing up your favorite episode of The Office or Friends or whichever show you prefer, even if youve seen it a thousand times before (in fact, ESPECIALLY if youve seen it a thousand times and can recite the lines right along with the characters).6. Volunteer at an animal shelter. In many cases, using your spare time to help others can also serve as powerful examples of self-care. And when those others are adorable dogs and cats in need of pets and walks and visits, the volunteer experience is unquestionably therapeutic.7. FaceTime a friend or relative.Calling a friend or family member who lives far away can help smooth over a challenging day, but using an app like FaceTime to video-chat with your loved one offers an experience akin to catching up in-person, which may feel even better.8. Clean out your car.Like doing laundry, scooping the trash out of your car and taking a vacuum to the floors and seats isnt an inherently fun task. But if youre a daily commuter, you spend plenty of time in your vehicle, and you deserve a tidy space that doesnt cause you additional stress.9. Get yourself to Inbox Zero.Take a look at your email inbox. How many unread messages do you have? If youre like many people, the number may easily approach (or surpass) 1,000. Even if your overloaded inbox doesnt actively bother you, the sight of that accusatory red number on your phone or computer screen isnt exactly pleasant. If you make the choice to spend 60 minutes going through your inbox, filing away emails that need replies, deleting junk messages, and working your way toward the coveted state of Inbox Zero, youll position yourself for greater productivity moving forward.10. Pull out a coloring book and crayons.Heres some good news for adults with active inn er children coloring books can be beneficial to grown-ups as well as kiddos. In a defense of coloring books for adults, CNN quotes art therapist Marygrace Berberian of the Graduate Art Therapy Program at NYU, who states that coloring definitely has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring about more mindfulness. Sounds good to us11. Bring something green into your house.Beautiful, natural, and relatively low-maintenance, live plants have the ability to both spruce up your house and backyard and to provide therapeutic perks, according to Womens Health. Not blessed with a green thumb? Try a plant thats especially hearty, like a succulent or a cactus.--
