What to Do When a Co-Worker Puts in Two Weeks Notice- The Muse
What to Do When a Co-Worker Puts in Two Weeks Notice- The Muse What to Do When a Co-Worker Puts in Two Weeks Notice For a variety of reasons, people leave their jobs. This is undoubtedly a big deal in their lives. However a departure doesnât just affect that person, but also those left behind, too. If the person leaving is your friend, you may be really sad. Who will you grab Thai food with on Thursdays? Who will listen to you rant about your worst client and then give you really good advice? (And even if you two never saw eye-to-eye, thereâll be a vacancy in your department, and thatâll affect you, too.) Regardless, thereâs more to it than writing well-wishes in a going away card and raising a glass at her farewell happy hour. Here are six smart things you should do when a colleague gives her two weeks notice. 1. Check in With Your Boss If someoneâs departure will impact your workload, itâs good to know how so you can be prepared. For example, if he wonât be replaced right away, you may be asked to take on extra work. Or, if the position is going to be reimagined and split across departments, that could affect your role, too. So, set a meeting and ask your boss what you can expect in the coming weeks (or months). Then ask to hash out a game plan together, so you can both be on the same page during the transition period. Of course, your manager will appreciate it a lot more if you frame this as a desire to be supportive while things are in flux, rather than a need to know exactly how many nights you may be asked to work a little later. 2. Learn His Skills Is your colleague leaving a role youâve been eyeing? If so, ask him to impart some of that coveted knowledge before he goes. Again, sell it to your manager as a desire to help keep bases covered. (Bonus: If the companyâs waiting to kick off the hiring process, youâll be a very attractive candidate for the role when it opens up.) And if your co-workerâs already training a replacement? Ask if you can sit in on the sessions. Hey, youâll still be building out your skill set- for free. 3. Ask for Notes From a top clientâs favorite wine choice to hacks for your companyâs most complicated software program, your colleague likely has her own trade secrets. Ask if sheâll share this info with you before she leaves. Preface any conversation with a compliment, âIt always impresses me that you consistently convince Company B to renew its contract early- what do you think youâre doing differently than the rest of us?â While any guides sheâs written along the way will be useful, odds are your boss already asked her to save those to the shared drive. So, I recommend asking for all the unofficial tips that made her so successful, including anything quirky that she felt silly putting down in writing. For example, âMichelle loves her dog more than anyone, so asking how Mr. Kibbles is doing is a surefire way to get on her good side.â 4. Do Your Own Version of an Exit Interview Of course, thereâs some feedback your co-worker would probably rather share outside the office walls. Invite her to coffee or lunch and ask her impression on the company, why sheâs leaving, and what advice and guidance she may be able to offer you. Of course, you canât do this with someone youâve never said more than âGood morningâ to. But if itâs a colleague you know, this is the time when sheâll probably be willing to share her insights. Just remember that you still work at the company. So even if she starts talking about how she secretly always hated another member of your team or how your bossâ voice is so annoying, donât join in. Redirect by telling her youâd love to hear what strategies she used to be successful in her position and what (positive) advice sheâd give to someone starting on the team tomorrow. 5. Connect Nowadays, one of the best way to keep tabs on a former colleague is LinkedIn. So, send a connection request before he get distracts with his new gig. If you worked together closely, be sure to ask for a LinkedIn recommendation as well. (Bonus points for good LinkedIn etiquette if you offer to write one for him, too.) Unlike his first few months at his new position, he probably does have the time now to complete requests like this. Related: Your 5-Minute Guide to Writing an Amazing LinkedIn Recommendation Depending on how close you are, itâs probably also a good idea to swap personal email addresses or follow each other on social media. While LinkedInâs the professional way to keep in touch, you may find email, tweeting articles and back forth, and even Instagram tagging to be a more natural, less âbuttoned-upâ way to say âhiâ throughout the coming years. 6. Show Your Appreciation Donât overlook saying a heartfelt goodbye. If you enjoyed working with someone- if he inspired you or taught you something- let him know. Showing appreciation does wonders for work relationships. Even though you wonât be working together, your paths may cross again someday- and if youâre in the same city and professional association- that day could be, like, tomorrow. Ending on a positive note, and then not letting the connection grow entirely cold, could make a big difference when it comes time for you to look for a new role. Even though a colleagueâs departure can be sad (or stressful), if you follow these six steps youâll be able to make the most of this situation. Photo of work conversation courtesy of Shutterstock.

Robotic Security
Robotic Security Robotic Security Robotic Security A thief looks to one side, then the other, heftly maneuvers over a fence and darts to each window. He sees what hes looking for, and then? A security guard calls out, sirens flash and an alarm goes off. The thief freezes before realizing hes actually been busted - by a robot. Lakewood, CO-based startup Gamma 2 Robotics is behind RAMSEE, a five-foot, 200-pound security guard robotthat moves at top speeds of about 25 miles per hour with the help of a brushless motor. These robots can particularly help in dangerous situations, says Francis Govers III, chief robotics officer for the company. You dont want a human dealing with a fire or a thief with a gun if you can avoid it. At the top, RAMSEE has a swivel-head pan tilt unit on its head that has both a high-definition camera and an FLIR thermal camera. Its arranged so both cameras always point at the same target. With a self-driving mobile sensor platform, Gamma 2 robots can perform both autonomous patrols and human-guided activities. Image: Gamma 2 Robotics The face allows two-way video conferencing and below that, 360-degree cameras run at near IR [infrared], he says. You have infrared illuminators that the robot can see that people cant see. It also has LIDAR [light detection and ranging] for things like mapping, obstacle avoidance, and motion detection. And it uses sonars and infrared detectors to see small objects. Designers went through four sets of prototypes to get to this current model. They started with an existing robot platform and put in new computers and sensors and, in a next generation, switched to brushless motors away from a previous setup containing gear motors and pulley. For the third generation, we built a mockup of the inside of the robot with new chassis, new wheels, et cetera, says Govers. Inertial measurement units sense bounce and tilt and sensors can help it know stairs are coming, he adds. But the software is also a key component. The software is ROS and we have two internal processors that are both Linux based. One is ODROID-XU4. It has 8 CPUs. The other is Nvidia, which is our vision processor; four regular cores and 130 GPUs. It was originally put it in because the thought was that it would be doing a lot of stereo vision but now its migrated into artificial intelligence and running our own program. Even though the robot can be put in harms way, he says the goal for the guard is to observe, report, and be a distraction. In the distraction role, it has very bright head lights, strobe lights like a police car, and that loud siren, he says. In the dark it would be quite intimidating and the synthesized voice doesnt sound robotic at all. Presently, they are working on improvements such as face recognition. The goal is to know who the workers are so they dont see them as intruders, he says. But the idea is to be able to tell if there are ex-workers who you want to make sure arent on the premises. Though a specific price point isnt being shared at the moment, Govers says it will be under $100,000. Our hope is this can be a compliment to security plans already in place, he says. This robot has the ability to be a real friend to companies. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion

When Your Boss Gets Mad About Two Weeks Notice - The Muse
When Your Boss Gets Mad About Two Weeks Notice - The Muse When Your Boss Gets Mad About Two Weeks Notice Throughout your career, youâll have the opportunity to make choices, big and small, easy and hard. At some points youâll have to decide if you should follow the rules. While Iâd typically err on the side of saying you wonât regret it if you do, Iâll also say that even if you do pay your dues and check all the boxes, you could still end up on a place you donât want to be. Take my story for example: Many years ago, I managed a small, family-owned restaurant in Brooklyn. It was just after I returned from a year of backpacking around South America, in desperate need of a job- any job- to brighten up my dwindling bank account. In the back of my mind, I knew that someday I hoped to return to the publishing/writing/editing industry, but at that point in time, I really wasnât thinking about my career path, and the restaurant gig served me well. I had a great relationship with my boss, one of the owners, and I lived 10 minutes away. I enjoyed free food and drinks, a steady paycheck plus benefits, and built-in friends (anyone whoâs ever spent any time working in the hospitality industry knows exactly what Iâm talking about). But after almost two years, I got restless and decided to seek out a bigger opportunity. And so I started interviewing for management jobs across the bridge, in Manhattan. It wasnât long before I accepted an offer and prepared to let my boss know that I was moving on. Although Iâd expected him to be disappointed, I assumed heâd also be supportive and encouraging because, you know, I was checking off all those boxes- telling him in person, following up with a written letter of resignation, offering to help wherever needed before my departure. But I quickly realized that playing by the rules wasnât enough to save me from his hostility upon hearing the news. I thought Iâd feel relieved after telling him. But instead, I felt confused. Both he (and his wife) defriended me on Facebook immediately. That was followed by two full weeks of his looking past me, either giving me one-word responses or barking orders at me, and, finally, in response to what I believed was a generous and kind parting email, a rant telling me that my quitting was very, very personal and also selfish- and no, he wasnât overreacting. I didnât scream, âI quit!â and run out the door, so why did he react like this? It was a slap in the face because Iâd done everything right, much the same way I imagine itâd feel to be this close to getting a job and having it go to an internal team member. Or working your tail off for months only to have the promotion youâd been coveting go to a colleague who didnât work half as hard. Being a professional- in my case, giving the standard two weeksâ notice and promising to help train my replacement- failed to protect me. It was a rough two weeks of digesting the fact that things werenât going as Iâd hoped or even anticipated. And although a part of me wanted to not honor my remaining time as a take-that-you-big-jerk move, I knew I couldnât let the staff down. And, actually, I think I hoped that heâd come around, recognize the mistake he was making in burning this bridge, and patch things up with me before it was too late. We exchanged a couple of emails before my departure wherein I tried to get him to soften his stance and treat me with a modicum of respect- or at least talk to me about it more, but he wouldnât budge. This just goes to show that you can plan things out perfectly, you can even play out a bunch of different scenarios based on varying reactions from the other party, but there will always be factors out of your control. Simply put, you canât orchestrate how someone else- your manager, the CEO, the recruiter- is going to respond. I wonât pretend that it doesnât suck when things go off track in a way thatâs upsetting or disappointing to you, yet simply being aware of this fact may make it easier to accept the unfair things that fall on your path. You can waste energy being offended and hurt, or you can do as I did and learn from the lessons. If you do that, you can take them with you as you move onward and upward.
